A Lesson in Faith Chloé Andries, Aline Capelle
In the north of France, a Catholic boarding school currently has two hundred pupils. They are all different; from devout children to sulking teenagers who look at their environment and upbringing with the necessary skepticism. The religious teachers are enthusiastic and accept everyone, even the critical documentary team of a former pupil ...
After twenty years, documentary filmmaker Chloé Andries returns to her old school. At this boarding school she forged friendships, learned to understand the world and developed her mind. The nuns who teach at the school were great, warm and helpful, but of course their teaching package contained a strongly religiously colored worldview. As an adult, Capelle brings both a personal ode to the heroines of yesteryear as well as a critical reflection on religious education, and the freedom, love and fear that accompany life at a Catholic boarding school. A Lesson in Faith seems to be the economic and spiritual counterpart of Enfants du Hasard (see also in the Belgian competition). While the latter focuses on the ups and downs of a village school and its many students with a migrant background, this documentary portrays a fancy boarding school with monocultural students. This also translates into their upbringing. Is the focus on Christian faith merely an enrichment? Capelle does not shy away from the paradoxes and provides an intelligent insight into boarding school life with the necessary nuance.
