FuocoammareGianfranco Rosi

Fuocoammare by Gianfranco Rossi was the first documentary to take home the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. A true winner that brings the relevant issue of refugees to the forefront in a unique way.

Berlin Jury president Meryl Streep spoke of a "major, visionary and necessary film” and the press was unanimously enthusiastic about this documentary. It tells the story of Lampedusa, the tiny Italian island in the midst of the storm that is the refugee crisis. One of the islanders is 12-year-old Samuele. Like all boys his age, he likes to have fun and hang out in the harbor. But his island is not like the other islands. Lampedusa has become the destination for scores of refugees, whose journey often ends when they drown off the coast. Every single day the islanders witness one of the greatest human tragedies of our time. Odd as it may seem, they also continue living their everyday lives on the island. Even in a small place like Lampedusa two worlds can coexist.

Rossi spent 1.5 years on the island and presents the story of the refugees next to the story of the local residents. It is not only tragedy and horror, there is also compassion and regular life. Rossi already came to DOCVILLE with 'El Sicario, Room 164’, a controversial documentary about a hit man, and ‘Sacro Gra’, a film that won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
