(SELF) CENSORSHIP THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

Who controls the millions of messages, pictures and videos which are uploaded daily on social media? And are we relating to much on the analyses of these information channels by an (American) multinational?

We all know some familiar examples of overzealous Facebook censorship. A photo exhibition showing a bare breast, an (un)popular opinion flagged by several users or the historically essential picture of the naked napalm girl... They are removed from social media, usually without any explanation and with hardly a possibility to complain. Who checks the millions of messages, photos and videos that are uploaded on social media every day? And is it a good thing that our information channels are being checked by an (American) multinational?

Moderated by Jeroen Baert (computer scientist and stand-up comedian), with Nathalie Van Raemdonck (Centrum voor Cybersecurity), Tim Cools (politie, cel informatica), Mortiz Riesewieck (regisseur) en Fanny Hidvégi (Access Now).
