In this poetic film, the director of Our Daily Bread takes an overnight trip across Europe and ends up in a world of security firms, night nurses, endless meetings and non-stop assistance, but also a world of illegal immigrants, excessive revelry and vulgar entertainment. With mostly wordless but expressive sequences he shows how Europe – which likes to portray itself as the crown of Western civilization – transforms once the sun goes down. Sometimes it seems as though the ‘Abendland’ is in her final hours.
