Day of the Doc | Scenario and music

Organized by Flanders Doc, in cooperation with Docville and the Director’s Union

The annual meeting of professionals in the author’s documentary genre focuses on two themes this year: scenario and music.

10:00 | Music for documentary film

Some say that adding music is not done in documentary film. Other filmmakers are happy to use the emotions and feelings music can evoke to strengthen their footage or to add an extra dimension.

During this session, filmmakers and musicians discuss how they make and use music and how directors and composers can work together.

Documentaries often turn to music that already exists. A song can even end up in the film by accident. An expert talks about how the do’s and don’ts of clearing music.

13:00 | Lunch

14:00 | Scenario and documentary

No one can imagine making a feature film without having a complete scenario to build on. But is this true for the documentary genre too? Are there strict rules? Or is the absence of a complete scenario more common than we think? We ask several filmmakers to give us a peek into their work method and illustrate their methods with scenes.

The conclusion at the end of this session might be that we should adopt the Dutch term “film plan” instead of scenario. Philippe Van Meerbeeck will be our moderator. As a member of the Flemish Audiovisual Fund’s Judging Committee he has looked at countless scenarios and film plans and knows exactly what the relevant issues are.

17:00 | Networking drink
