Mémoire d'EnvolEve Duchemin

Pigeon fancying, the art of breeding, training and racing pigeons, was long a popular sport in the mining and industrials basins of the north. On Sundays, the only day of rest, the many aficionados of the region held pigeon races. This passion helped them momentarily forget their daily lives as they feverishly watched the sky for their pigeon returning from places they will never see. Today, the world has changed. Pigeons glide over the post-industrial disaster zone of Wallonia where pigeon fanciers are rarer and rarer. Like the factories, pigeon fancying is relocating, and the best pigeons become the object of financial speculation. In particular, they are sold to the Japanese and Chinese who develop a passion for this now professional and costly sport. The director met several pigeon fanciers for an appealing look at this collective art, torn between tradition and modernity.
