Maria by CallasTom Volf
Maria Callas - one of the best opera singers post World War II - was a living legend, haunted by scandals and persistent gossip. Now, forty years after her death, Maria By Callas tells the whole story entirely in her own words. Finally a tormented icon gets a chance to share her side of the story.
If one opera figure deserves a place next to the Mick Jaggers and Keith Moons of this world in terms of diva behavior, then it must be Maria Callas. In a world marked by rigid protocol and restrained high class, she had the courage to stop halfway through a concert, despite the presence of international royalty. She also fought a bitter feud with her rival Renata Tebaldi. At least, that is what the public allegedly “knows”. Tom Volf thought it was high time to correct some misunderstandings and to place the sensational gossip (such as her relationship with Aristotle Onassis, who left her for Jacky Kennedy) in the right context. Debuting documentary filmmaker Tom Volf only used TV interviews, archive footage and letters written by Callas. Paradoxically, he achieved the most objective portrait of the singer to date. After all, Maria emerges as an extremely complex figure with enormous self-knowledge and a sense of perspective. The result has nothing in common with gossip and sensational news, but is a deeply endearing and tragic document.
