Nuts!Penny Lane

A doctor without scruples who gains fame and amasses a fortune by inserting goat testicles into impotent men? ‘Nuts’ is a quirky and hilarious documentary about an incredible story, and about the power of a good story.

John Brinkley is a young doctor who started a practice in Kansas in 1918. One day a farmer from the village asks him a remarkable question: could the implantation of the testicles of a healthy goat in his body cure his impotence? Brinkley is open to this crazy idea and performs the operation. Soon more impotent patients start showing up. Brinkley and his testicle transplants gain national fame and he builds up a huge fortune. In between his operations, he also founds a radio station, goes into politics and deceives almost everyone around him. And successfully so, because everybody so badly wants to believe his tall stories.

And that is exactly what 'Nuts' is really about: it is an amazing, colorful biopic about a beautiful character but director Penny Lane also demonstrates how much we all love to go along with a compelling story. After all, everyone believes the stories they want to believe ... Lane uses archive material, different animations, interviews and an "unreliable" narrator to tell the story.  The viewer might be put on the wrong track, like Brinkley did with everyone he knew. An astute and incomparable documentary about (our urge for) a fantastic story.
