The Girl Who Saved My LifeHogir Hirori

Because of a girl, a man does not board a flight with a fatal ending. This is not the story of a Hollywood rom com, but an incredibly incisive refugee portrait by the Kurdish-Swedish filmmaker Hogir Hirori.

Filmmaker Hogir Hirori lives in Sweden with his pregnant wife. When he sees the images of millions of people fleeing Iraq because of the advance of IS, he cannot help but document this tragedy. It is his native country: he knows the area, speaks the language and - above all - he knows what it's like to be a refugee.

Once there, he gets the chance to travel in a helicopter headed for the Shingal mountains, where hundreds of thousands of Yazidis are trapped, surrounded by IS. A unique opportunity for a documentary filmmaker. But on the way to the helicopter, he spots an 11-year-old girl, lying on the ground, in pain, by herself, in the scorching heat. He decides not to take the helicopter, and to help her instead. A decision that saved his life, because that same helicopter crashed.

He later returns to find the girl who saved his life. During his quest he meets many war victims, who all have their own story. The big difference with other documentaries is that Hirori is "one of them", he also has his own story. When he was about the same age as the girl he was separated from his parents for a period of time. His father was imprisoned because he fought against IS with the Kurdish Peshmerga. His involvement permeates every image. More than ever, viewers experience the reality of war refugees.
