Made in Ethiopia

Xinyan Yu, Max Duncan Canada 2024 90 min.

In the middle of Ethiopia sits an immense Chinese business park employing 20,000 Ethiopian workers. Chinese businesswoman Motto faces big challenges when the park wants to expand a lot more. Meanwhile, many Ethiopians - like their country - are at a crossroads: should they choose industrialization or not?

Filmmakers Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan followed the entire process of the expansion of the factory for four years, resulting in a nuanced film about the many contradictions at play: between the Chinese and the Ethiopians, between city and countryside, between man and woman and, above all, between profit-driven business and deep-rooted tradition. They follow not only the driven businesswoman Motto who, despite missing her daughter in China, is totally committed to the immense expansion project, but also Workinesh and her family who are struggling with the loss of their land and Beti, who works in the factory.
