I Hope This Helps
Daniel M. Freed United States 2023 51 min.
Artificial intelligence will destroy humanity, at least according to investigative journalist Daniel Freed. He is searching for ways to defeat AI in a future war between man and machine. To help him do this, he - ironically - uses AI, in the form of a chatbot that he visualises as an adorable blue stuffed animal. A humorous film that urges us to think about the changing relationship between humanity and technology in an orginal way.

Daniel Freed uses the help of Google's AI chatbot Bard to collaborate on a documentary about AI. Bard appears in the blue, furry form he asked for and helps Freed explore the benefits and risks of this world-changing innovation. Bard gives Freed suggestions for building and funding his anti-AI army, including unconventional ideas such as baking and selling ‘We Will Not Be Replaced’ cakes. Entertaining and humorous, but also dead serious and thought-provoking. Because the possibilities of AI are fascinating, and it is mind-boggling to see that a chatbot can react sensitively and empathetically, but also destructively and deceptively. In itself, not surprising since AI literally draws from all our human references...

Can AI be (self) conscious?
Ultimately, everyone bases their decision on output: people are self-aware - if only because they answer 'yes' when you ask them that question, but what criteria determine self-awareness? And how does the system behind a Google Chatbot really work? Do we fully understand that? Do we write off self-awareness in advance for future generations of AI systems because they are digital entities? And if we ever determine the opposite, what legal framework is there for that?
Panel discussion with Prof. Grant Ramsey (Higher Institute for Philosophy, KU Leuven), Roel Heremans (artist working on AI and the relationship between humans and machines) and Daniel Freed (journalist and director of I Hope This Helps)
