Signals of Life
Leandro Picarella Italy 2023 105 min.
In the idyllic Italian mountain village of Lignan stands an astronomical observatory. Astrophysicist Paolo Calcidese takes up residence there as the only winter resident, but a technical problem forces him to leave the solitude behind to focus on something perhaps even more unattainable for him than the distant stars: the people around him.

"Those who can no longer bear proximity can still seek their happiness in the distance". That was at least the intention of the somewhat grumpy astrophysicist Paolo Calcidese, but a problem with the telescope forces him to do the very thing he wants to escape: contact with people. A quirky, poetic documentary that draws beautiful parallels between the search for contact in the vastness of space and in the loneliness of life among humans.
