Une femme qui part

Ellen Vermeulen Belgium 2024 92 min.

In 1952, Marie-Louise Chapelle was the first French woman to reach an untouched Himalayan peak. Years later, filmmaker Ellen Vermeulen is following in her footsteps; literally and figuratively. Inspired by Chapelle's extraordinary archive, Vermeulen in turn traverses inhospitable snow landscapes while reflecting on the social limits, desires and complexities of being a woman. An intimate story and an extraordinary journey, guided by the reflections of two women from two different eras.

The remarkable Marie-Louise Chapelle combined two lives: six months a year she was a mother, and the other six months she conquered unclimbed mountains. Seventy years later, filmmaker Ellen Vermeulen is following in her footsteps. Driven by Chapelle's archive of diaries, letters and footage, Vermeulen traverses with her camera the inhospitable snow landscapes that have changed beyond recognition through time and climate. She interweaves images she shot herself with Chapelle's archive material and reflects on her own life questions: a life with children, or without? An extraordinary journey and an intimate search for meaning, in which time, memories and choices become deeply intertwined. A film about limits, desires and the complexity of being a woman.
