Life and other Problems
Max Kestner Denmark 2024 99 min.
A young, perfectly healthy giraffe is killed and fed to lions by a zoo in Copenhagen. This rather shocking news about the death of giraffe Marius went viral ten years ago. For director Max Kestner, it is the first domino in a series of successive existential questions: What is the meaning of life and death? Does consciousness exist? Where does love come from?

With an open mind and lots of scientific curiosity, Kestner embarks on a philosophical journey around the world in search of answers to his questions. With contributions from scientists like Charles Foster and Eske Willerslev, every answer prompts three new questions. As this adventurous film tells the multifaceted story of the life and death of a ‘surplus’ animal in a zoo, new insights into the great and small wonders of the universe emerge, revealing that interconnectedness with other beings is at the scientific core of the explanation of life.
