De wilde Noordzee

Mark Verkerk The Netherlands 2024 88 min.

For lovers of Onze Natuur who like to take a leap into the deep. From plankton to basking sharks, seals to killer whales, the North Sea is home to an enormous collection of inhabitants. It is a mighty piece of nature, but it is also one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, and there's a ton of fishing in the area. Do industry and nature even go together? Travel beyond the beach and get to know the North Sea from a completely different angle, with all its secrets and in all its glory.

Director Mark Verkerk is known for his nature documentaries about the Dutch nature. His work has already been screened at DOCVILLE several times: De Wilde Stad was, for example, part of the 2019 edition. In De Wilde Noordzee, he goes even further and takes the viewer on a journey under the waves of the North Sea. Inspired by naval officer and explorer Jacques Cousteau, experienced divers and cameramen Peter van Rodijnen and Dick Harrewijn try to capture the wild, mysterious North Sea in all her facets. Every part of her complex ecosystem is included, from the smallest plankton to the largest basking shark, because each of them contributes to the health of the North Sea. A documentary about the often destructive relationship between humans and nature, but also about faith in her resilience and appreciation for her boundless beauty.
