The Bad Guy

Louise Van Assche, Kwinten Gernay Belgium 2024 69 min.

Uvalde, Texas. A year after a school shooting in her neighborhood, Belgian Louise is looking for a school for her daughter. The gun epidemic has become so intense that American schools are now steering away from prevention and towards preparation. Mass killings seem to be accepted as part of the American fabric, and active shooter drills and armed teachers are becoming increasingly normalised. How does this approach affect children's mental well-being? What does the future look like? And how do you explain all that to a toddler?

Three years after moving to the U.S. and two months after the birth of her daughter, documentary filmmaker Louise Van Assche hears on the news about a gunman killing 19 children and 2 teachers in an elementary school a few villages away. She becomes intrigued with school security and learns more about armed teachers and active shooter exercises. Together with editor and filmmaker Kwinten Gernay, she investigates how much fear parents and children face on a daily basis. The Bad Guy is about a system driven by fear rather than reason, where preparation trumps prevention and where children must protect themselves.
