Viktor
Olivier Sarbil Denmark, Ukraine, France 2024 91 min.
Viktor, a young deaf man, watches warily during the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A fan of samurai films and raised on stories of war, he romanticises the soldier's life and enlists in the army. Time after time, he is rejected and has to find his place in a war he cannot hear. For the special sound effects, which are an essential feature of the film, director Olivier Sarbil collaborated with the Oscar-winning team behind the film Sound of Metal.

In 2011, documentary filmmaker Olvier Sarbil lost part of a hand and the hearing in one ear after a grenade attack in Libya. Living with single-sided deafness changed his understanding of the world and his perception of sound and silence. That new perspective inspired him to explore the world of a deaf man against the chaos of war. This is a story of belonging, of resilience, and the struggle to survive in a world so brutally loud for some and painfully silent for others. But also an intimate story of vulnerability and the evolution from romanticising wartime towards understanding its grim reality.
