The Gardener, the Buddhist & the Spy
Håvard Bustnes Norway 2024 94 min.
Is he a spy, a double spy or a triple spy? For five years, journalist Rob Moore won the trust of anti-asbestos activists until a major scandal revealed that he is actually a spy for the asbestos industry mafia. Refusing to be labelled a cynical crook, Rob contacts two experienced British journalists to prove that he was secretly spying on precisely the asbestos mafia that hired him. Is Rob a truth-seeking whistleblower or a cynical manipulator? And is the asbestos industry indeed so perverse?

This extraordinary detective documentary about power and deception in the asbestos industry is already the fifth film of Norwegian director Håvard Bustnes that is featured at DOCVILLE. Two experienced British investigators try to uncover the truth about Rob Moore's bizarre story, but become entangled in a web of lies. After Moore is unmasked as a paid spy for greedy oligarchs and multinationals trying to prevent a global ban on asbestos, he comes up with an even more shocking story: he claims he was, in fact, simply gathering evidence against his employers. The lines between truth and lies become blurred. Is Rob a truth-seeking whistleblower or a cynical manipulator? And who controls the story?
