The Last Republican

Steve Pink United States 2024 90 min.

Why are there no (more) Republicans speaking out against Trump?  Republican Adam Kinzinger - a conservative congressman since 2011 - was one of only 10 Republicans to hold Trump accountable after the storming of the Capitol. Director Steve Pink - who, as a left-wing Democrat, is at the very opposite end of the political spectrum - follows him in his hallucinatory final year as a Republican congressman. They form an unlikely but amusing duo in this extraordinary political documentary, with their prickly but respectful interaction being extremely refreshing in these polarised times.

How can opponents find a common ground for dialogue in this time of political division? For Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, the answer is his favourite film, Hot Tub Time Machine by director Steve Pink. During the most difficult year of his life, Kinzinger opens up to Pink, despite their opposing political views. Their shared sense of humour forms the basis for a respect for other opinions that has become rare. The film follows Kinzinger in the hallucinatory year when he not only votes to impeach Donald Trump, but is part of the committee investigating the storming of the Capitol. The consequences are huge: Kinzinger is not only ditched by his own party, but he and his family face death threats. As he tries to withstand the enormous pressure, he struggles with the immense consequences of staying true to his core values.
