Mr. Nobody Against Putin

David Borenstein, Pavel Ilyich Talankin Denmark, Czech Republic 2025 90 min.

Primary school teacher Pavel is - as he himself states early on in the film - a ‘nobody’. Indeed, he is not the person you would spontaneously pick as the resistance hero who dares to take on the all-powerful and ruthless Vladimir Putin. And yet this insignificant but extremely likeable primary school teacher in Russia dares to resist the encroaching nationalist propaganda in his own way.

In addition to being a teacher, Pavel Talankin is also the school's official videographer - after all, the regime needs to know what is going on so far away from Moscow. In this capacity, he films daily life at the school, recording the new, blatantly nationalistic propaganda lessons, the forced military drills and oaths of loyalty forced on the children. For months, we see through the eyes of this brave, increasingly heartbroken teacher how fear infests a small town, how a regime forces its people into ideological tools, how (dis)information works at the local level - in short, how to brainwash a generation. Several self-filmed, direct-to-camera confessions and a healthy dose of humour almost make you forget that it is unimaginably risky to document Putin's propaganda war at home like this.
