My Stolen Planet
Farahnaz Sharifi Germany, Iran 2024 82 min.
Iranian Farah is forced by the strict regime in her country to distinguish between an indoor and an outdoor world. It is like living on two completely different planets. She can only be free on her private planet. In a cinematic diary, she combines her own footage with bought home videos from strangers to create an alternative history of Iran. A unique insight into the story and struggles of contemporary Iranian women.

This exceptionally creative documentary that combines own footage with archive material has already won awards at international film festivals such as IDFA, Thessaloniki and Chicago. Filmmaker Farahnaz Sharifi was born in 1979 during the Islamic revolution in Iran and learnt at an early age the contrast between the freedom indoors, where dancing and singing are allowed, and the oppression outdoors where strict rules apply. She registers moments of joy and resistance in her own recordings and combines them with archive footage, including that of Leyla, an Iranian professor who left Iran during the revolution. In this way, she wants to preserve memories of another world, something her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, can only encourage. With her pleasant narrative voice, Sharifi brings the story of Iranian women from the inside.
