About a Hero

“Not in another 4,500 years will a computer create a film as good as one of mine,” claimed famous filmmaker Werner Herzog eight years ago. Filmmaker Piotr Winiewicz - with Herzog's permission - took up the challenge. He used Herzog's oeuvre as input for an AI system and commissioned it to write a screenplay. The result is an experimental film that - surprisingly - became the opening film of the renowned documentary festival IDFA.

About a Hero is not a documentary in the classic sense, but rather the disruptive final result of a special AI experiment revolving around the work of Werner Herzog. The film not only tells a bizarre story with echoes of Herzog's work, but also raises critical questions about 'authenticity' and how we perceive reality, with contributions from writer Stephen Fry, among others. An alienating, thought-provoking film that explores the still fairly unexplored cross-pollination between film and artificial intelligence.
