And the King Said, What a Fantastic MachineAxel Danielson, MAXIMILIEN VAN AERTRYCK

From British King Edward VII's obsession with the very first camera to the now more than 45 billion cameras constantly recording around the world, moving pictures are everywhere. These filmmakers, who call themselves visual sociologists, demonstrate the human obsession with film and its impact on society.

Today, there are 45 billion cameras on Earth. But how has the invention of the camera affected contemporary society? How do people act when the lense is pointed at them? How do they use these devices? Moving pictures frequently get manipulated, even in the 19th century. A series of archive footage fluctuates between image and illusion, from Leni Riefenstahl's view on her nazi-propaganda, to green screen footage of Eurovision presentors.

Outside the dox

Every year DOCVILLE provides a special place for documentaries that dare to deviate from the classic paths. Films that experiment with form or content and thus broaden and enrich the genre. So this year there is an associative homage to film, an interactive research documentary, an extraordinary simulation of a crisis and a poetic immersion in Scandinavian melancholy.
