Emperors of NothingCédric Gerbehaye

An immersion within the Brussels prison of Forest, notorious for its inhumane incarceration conditions, showing different reactions of peoples' spirits to this harsh world. What it means to be behind bars, is illustrated by personal and candid moments with inmates and wardens alike.

An immersion within the prison of Forest, starting in 2016, just after the historic strike led by the prison officers in the Brussels prison of Forest, and at a time when the conditions of incarceration at Forest prison had already led to several condemnations of Belgium by the European Court of Human Rights. This intimate portrait ends in November 2022, the day Forest was closed and moved to the new mega-prison in Haren. The film was made during this period of change, stagnation and expectation.

Belgian selection

DOCVILLE presents the best Belgian documentaries of the past year in a very varied selection: compelling stories about people who live for their passion, whether it be cycling, circuit riding or mermaids, but also socially probing stories about illegal adoption, the dangers of criticism under Putin, the link between jazz and decolonization or the abominable conditions in Vorst prison. Finally, there are also films with a more philosophical angle on the transience of the human body or the impact of imaging. The best film may call itself the winner of the Jury Prize for Best Belgian Documentary.
