Nenets vs GasSergio Ghizzardi

In the heart of the Arctic lies the Yamal Peninsula. After the discovery of vast gas reserves, big energy companies have unsurprisingly drawn to the region. But Yamal is also the ancestral home of the Nenets, who have grazed their herds there for more than 200 generations.

Every year, Vassily and his brigade undertake a 1,500-kilometer trek from the north to the south of the Yamal peninsula. But how long will they be able to do so? Many pastures have given way to gas extraction fields, growing cities, a railroad, and even an airport. Not to mention the deep scars in the landscape caused by gas and oil extraction, and the new nuclear-powered icebreakers creating busy shipping lanes in the Arctic. As industries dramatically change the landscape and accelerate the effects of global warming, the Nenets can't help but observe their way of life being threatened.

Belgian selection

DOCVILLE presents the best Belgian documentaries of the past year in a very varied selection: compelling stories about people who live for their passion, whether it be cycling, circuit riding or mermaids, but also socially probing stories about illegal adoption, the dangers of criticism under Putin, the link between jazz and decolonization or the abominable conditions in Vorst prison. Finally, there are also films with a more philosophical angle on the transience of the human body or the impact of imaging. The best film may call itself the winner of the Jury Prize for Best Belgian Documentary.
