When Lambs become LionsJon Kasbe
The illegal ivory trade and the battle against it divides some regions in Kenya. In a village near a nature reserve, a small ivory trader tries to survive, while rangers use every means possible to prevent poaching. His own cousin is one of them, but he has not been paid for months and has doubts about his commitment. A unique look at the people behind the ivory trade and their motivations.
The declining elephant population in Africa has shocked the world. Are we headed for a total ban on ivory trade? The Kenyan government is using troops to stop illegal poachers. But who are these poachers who risk everything - even their lives - to trade ivory anyway? In his debut, director Jon Kosbe followed two men who are in the epicenter of the (fight against) ivory trade during three years. He gained unprecedented access to their lives and is able to offer a rare insight into their perspectives and motivations. We even gain insight into the poachers, who in their eyes are continuing a tradition and who put things in a different perspective by not placing the life of an elephant above that of a human being.
